Sustainable Travel

Do you find yourself increasingly wanting to do your bit when you travel? Minimise your impact while making sure local people, cultures, ecosystems and planet Earth benefit now and also in the future? Then check out a few pointers below to help you do just that. Scroll down for a special offer too!

Choose more energy efficient modes of transport

Travelling by foot, bike and by public transport has fewer - or no - emissions making them the most efficient modes of travel. It has the added benefit of being part of the overall journey and can be a great way of meeting others while out and about.  Electric cars are also up there, but not everyone has one.

Take a look at Good Journey for some great car-free ideas (we hope to be on this soon too). Check out Trainline for itinerary planning and then head to Split My Fare to save money on train tickets. Fancy a bit more luxury? Bid on upgrading to First Class using Seatfrog and you may only pay an extra fiver.

Arriva Buses has a good search facility and it's worth checking out Britain's 'most scenic bus route' running from Leeds to Whitby, which takes in the moors and coast.

I'm aware, some of our dark sky event locations are remote, so we'll happily help with itineraries, provide taxi numbers for the last stretch of your journey and give accommodation details before you book.  We'll drop you off at your accommodation when we finish - where possible.

Oh and if you do travel to one of our experiences on public transport - and provide proof - we'll give you £5 off your booking!

Stay a while

Extending your stay is not only good for your soul, it's good for local people and the economy. Taking your time to meet the locals, you get to understand little quirks of their culture. I love hearing different accents, discovering the history unique to that place and generally finding out how they do things differently.

Booking accommodation that's independent and locally-owned supports the local economy, giving owners a much needed financial boost. They're also the font of all knowledge so you can learn so much more about the place.

On most of our event pages, I've included a 'stay a while' section with some suggested accommodation links.

By the way, quite a few providers now have EV charging points for electric vehicles. Check directly with them before you book.

Explore local and choose activities that reduce impact on nature

Keeping local on your holidays means you reduce transport emissions, but it depends on your mode of travel!

North York Moors is brilliant for walking with many trails to explore. If cycling's your thing, there's a vast network for the novice to the experienced. Essentially, if you love the big outdoors and more active ways to get around you're in the right place!

If you want to reduce your impact on nature, choose businesses who have signed up to the North York Moors' Nature Friendly Scheme (we're in it). Look for activities that minimise wildlife disturbance, eg. using a kayak, canoe, walking etc and  stick to the countryside code.

Buy Local

Buying locally-produced goods and services means more money stays with the local community. It supports those fantastic, independent micro-businesses that do amazing things. Spending money with them means they can continue with what they do best.

If you're after good food when you visit North York Moors, check out the Taste of the North York Moors and head to North York Moors National Park's website for further suggestions.

If you're staying longer after one of our events, why not book on a pamper day or a
wildlife watching trip?  We can give you pointers where to go. Or how about an Adventures for the Soul bespoke 'wellbeing in nature', soothing experience?  Please contact Alison for more information.

Much more information can be found here too.....

There are many more tips I could write, but I think this web page has lots of good information and so does this one. If you have any further questions about sustainable travel please get in touch.

Most importantly, I hope some of this information helps you enjoy your wonderful and well-deserved break away.
